Although musicals are a popular concept in the west, the Indian audience hardly gets to see them here. But theatre producer Ashvin Gidwani hopes to change that with his new musical Kennedy Bridge. “Indian audiences are gradually becoming more refined, discerning and knowledgeable with regards to their tastes and sensibilities.
They are becoming more receptive and are now appreciating quality theatre,” he says.
Ashvin adds that he wanted to move away from the tried and tested and bring something totally fresh and new in feel, texture and appeal to the table.
“Musical productions are rare in the country but it is a chance I am willing to take,” he admits, “Kennedy Bridge has very strong content, is backed by some awesome individual performances and possesses superb production values. We left no stone unturned in our humble attempt at bringing to the average Indian theatre goer a theatrical experience of a lifetime! So all it takes is a great, quality product created by some of the best minds in the business to draw in the audience! I’m sure the new age Indian theatre aficionado will appreciate the musical that is Kennedy Bridge!”
With a cast comprising Richa Chadda, Manav Gohil, Achint Kaur, Asif Ali Beg, Yuri, Hemwant Tiwari, Yamini Kshirsagar, Yash and Hritik Belani, the play has everything going for it. “Based on a true story, Kennedy Bridge is a production with substance, every character has multiple layers to his/her role that gradually draws in the audience.
It’s a play that really makes one think and wonder, as it unravels on stage,” says Ashvin. So what does he think the audince will take away with them when they leave the theatre after watching the show? “The play takes you on an emotional rollercoaster and tugs at your heart. It takes you from happiness and moves you to tears by the end, leaving the theatre sombre, touched by the poignancy of it all. The play has a social, parental and emotional message that audiences can discern at various stages and levels,” he replies.
